Top Barbadian boxer Shawn Terry Cox is eyeing success in his Commonwealth Cruiserweight Championship bout against Danie Venter in South Africa next month.
Cox, Barbados’ leading boxer over the past few years, said he was keen on winning the contest.
“I am looking to bring home the belt. I am going to South Africa for two reasons: revenge and that Commonwealth belt,” he said.
Cox, who turned professional in 2007 after success in the amateur ranks, said his training had increased in the buildup to the bout and was determined not to lose.
“I am not going to let him beat me punch for punch. If he tries to knock me out, I am going to knock him out because I am going to war,” he said.
“I train three times a day and my coach has me working on some different stuff. It won’t be easy but we need to be in camp to see everything he has taught me so we can put everything into place.”
Promoter Sam Layne said they were looking for help to get Cox in a camp in Las Vegas in preparation for the fight.
“We want him to do well and we are looking for assistance from the Ministry of Sport and we hope to get the funds soon so he can be in Las Vegas,” Layne said.
The promoter said an opportunity like this offered Barbados “free marketing”.
“Our main focus is to put in the hard work. If we get the funds for Cox to go to camp, the bout will provide extra exposure for Barbados,” Layne added.
“Boxing in Barbados is at a low right now but although we don’t have funds available, [boxing] can be bigger and better.” (CC)
