AN?AWARD-WINNING sculptor is calling for greater use of Barbados’ mahogany in the handicraft industry here.
Ashanti Trotman, winner of the 2013 Central Bank’s Award Of Excellence in the bank-sponsored Crop Over Visual Arts Festival with his piece Echoes Of Our Heritage, said local mahogany was unique in its texture. He pointed to the work that was going on with Medford Mahogany Creations.
“There is an abundance of local mahogany for that kind of work,” he said. “Barbados mahogany is unique in terms of its texture.”
Trotman said there was a lot of mahogany lying around, but Barbados did not have any major furniture industry that really used local mahogany. (JS)
