Await all-clear

Don’t do it!
This is the warning coming from Lalu Vaswani, president of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), and executive director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) Tony Walcott, to employers who called out workers before the all-clear was given yesterday morning following the passage of Tropical Storm Chantal.
This warning came against the backdrop that a number of people raised concerns that their relatives were being asked to report to work yesterday morning prior to the all-clear being given by the Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite at around 11:30 a.m.
Vaswani said it was critical that businesses not only pay attention to making a profit but also take into consideration the welfare of staff, especially during times of natural disasters.
“You need to follow the advice of the Department of Emergency Management and you should also take into consideration the safety of your employees. Any person who is operating a business has to conform to that same standard,” he said. (MM)
