The?Beckles Commission, which submitted a report to Government last year on reforming tertiary education, is distancing itself from Government’s recent announcement that from next year students attending the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus will be required to pay their own tuition fee.
A spokesman for the group of educators, who requested anonymity, contacted the SUNDAY?SUN?yesterday to emphasize that the payment of tuition fees by students was not included in the recommendations which the panel submitted to Government.
The spokesman said they were disappointed to hear references to the report during the Budget debate and suggestions by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler that the group had recommended the payment  of tuition fees by students.
When contacted yesterday, Principal of the Campus, Sir Hilary Beckles, who was the chairman of the commission, said members were livid, especially after hearing it said  in Parliament last week that the recommendation had come out of the report.
