A controversy is brewing in the Barbados Economics Society (BES).
Former president Ryan Straughn has not only withdrawn his participation as an executive member of a newly selected body but has cautioned the society against allowing the Central Bank of Barbados to determine its position on issues and virtually run the executive.
Straughn’s comments came in a stinging email to the society soon after a new president was elected and four of the Central Bank’s employees were named to serve on its executive body.
Noting that he had no animosity towards the society’s membership, the former president said that some contributions made at the annual general meeting leading up to the elections were clearly designed for other purposes.
