Barbados women earned a favourable seeding and have been drawn in Group 2 for the start of the team event at the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Championships that were scheduled to begin at the Beausejour Indoor Facility, St Lucia, last night.
The team of Julia Morris, Anthonette Riley, Ann Reid and Sherrice Felix will be competing against Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent and the host team St Lucia. With two teams from the group set to advance in the eight-team tournament, Barbados are favoured to move forward along with the Trinidadians.
The Barbados seeding was upgraded on the strength of the rating earned by Felix at the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) World Championship in Paris earlier this year.
The other group includes the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The Barbados men’s team of Trevor Farley, Kevin Farley, Mark Dowell and Kristian Doughty have been drawn in Group 3 along with Guadeloupe, St Vincent and Martinique.
Group 1 includes the Dominican Republic, French Guiana and Aruba, while Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Guyana will compete in Group 2.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the second round. Matches will be played daily starting at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Last year, Barbados women finished without a medal in the team competition but the men finished second behind Jamaica with the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico joint third. (PH)
