BARBADOS had to be content with two bronze medals when they bowed out of the team events at the Caribbean Regional Table Federation’s Championships at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in St Lucia yesterday.
The medals came after both men’s and women’s teams lost their semi-final encounters. The women’s team put on an impressive performance in the group exchanges.
Their second place finish earned them a semi-final berth but they folded 3-0 to Guyana who were set to take on Trinidad and Tobago in the final last night. Both losing semi-finalists were awarded bronze medals.
Barbados had earlier beaten St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0 but lost to Trinidad and Tobago 3-0.
The Barbados men put on a dominant display to win their group, taking out Martinique, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Guadeloupe 3-0.
In the quarter-final, Barbados blanked French Guiana 3-0. Mark Dowell defeated Jonathan Coupra 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 4-11, 11-7; Trevor Farley beat Letard Gilbert 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, while Kevin Farley won from Stephane Figaro 11-9, 11-5, 11-2.
Trinidad and Tobago then overpowered the Barbadians as they romped to a comfortable 3-0 win in the semi-finals.
Curtis Humphrey beat Trevor Farley 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8; Dexter St Louis toppled Kevin Farley 11-9, 11-3, 7-11, 11-3, before David Mahabir chopped down Mark Dowell 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.
The tournament is set to continue today with the start of the doubles and mixed doubles.
