A wave of tragedy hit Barbados yesterday, with a stabbing death, an apparent suicide and the discovery of a man’s body.
Police also reported that a man was grazed by a bullet in a shooting in New Orleans, The City, and that an incoherent woman was found on the Drill Hall, St Michael beach with a wrist slit.
Two families were plunged into grief when 18-year-old Chevonne King, the mother of a five-month-old son, was found by her best friend hanging at her home around 10:30 a.m. in an apparent suicide, and when Terrell Alleyne, 26, was stabbed during an altercation with another man in Silver Sands, Christ Church. Alleyne died at the scene.
Alleyne’s weeping mother was too distraught to speak to the media. The mother of his child fainted when she saw his body on the ground. Witnesses said Alleyne had been sitting quietly on a bench, speaking with a male companion before there was an argument and he was stabbed.
Over at the home where King was found hanging, her mother, Shirley King, was trying to figure out why her daughter “would do this”.
“I left her at home this morning preparing the water to bathe the baby,” she said.
The mother of four, who was being comforted by several relatives and friends, said she was at work when she received the news that the former Grazettes Primary and The St Michael School student had died.“She was smart, bubbly and fun-loving. That was my daughter, my only daughter,” she told the SATURDAY SUN. “I can’t believe it. When I left this morning . . . she was moving around getting ready to bathe the baby.”
The mother said that her daughter was still in the process of deciding which career path she wanted to take.
Sonia King said her niece was loved by everybody. “This family is a close family.
Her brothers are all broken up; one tell me just now, ‘My only sister gone’,” Sonia remarked.
Police public relations officer Inspector David Welch also confirmed that a young woman, whose name was not released, was found on the Drill Hall beach with her wrist slit.
He said she was incoherent when police arrived and she was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was reported to be recovering.
Lawmen are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Ryan Bourne, 37, of Parish land, Christ Church, whose body was discovered at the junction of Yorkshire and Lower Greys, Christ Church, in the early hours yesterday.
Police said the body was barebacked and clad in a pair of black trousers.
