STATUTORY CONTRIBUTIONS are not the only payments some employers are deducting from workers’ salaries and refusing to pay in.
The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) has confirmed that some companies are also taking out union dues from the pay packs of unionized members but not passing them on.
General secretary Sir Roy Trotman told the SUNDAY?SUN that at least one large company recently averted facing legal action by agreeing to pay up.
The issue was mentioned in the BWU’s 2013 annual report Unfazed, Unrelenting, Pressing On, released ahead of its 72nd annual delegates conference yesterday. It identified one establishment and its “blatant record of deduction of workers’ NIS [National Insurance Scheme] charges and the union dues and its failure to pass on these charges”.
“The union has been forced to commit to engaging the law courts for redress,” the report stated.
