Operators of the high-paying Caribbean Super Lotto say most of its players are from Barbados and Jamaica.
Sasha-Ann Johnson, Super Lotto finance administrator, said there had been seven winners so far of the game that was introduced in August 2009; three from Barbados, three from Jamaica and one from St Maarten.
Super Lotto is played in eight countries: Barbados, Jamaica, St Maarten, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominican Republic, Anguilla, St Kitts-Nevis, and the United States Viragin Islands.
Though not providing figures, Johnson said the majority of ticket buyers in the multimillion-dollar game of chance are divided “between Jamaica and Barbados. It is almost 50/50 right now”.
Lisa-Ann Jackman-Corbin, brand manager for Barbados, said for the games of chance here, especially the Mega 6 and the Double Draw, there were hundreds of winners.
“So there are quite a few people in Barbados whose lives change every day just by playing the Barbados lottery,” said Jackman-Corbin.
Asked if she believed some people were buying too many tickets, given the harsh economic circumstances, Sonia Davidson, vice-president of group corporate communications for Supreme Ventures Limited in Jamaica, said, “In every discipline you have the good and the bad.
“But with the lottery, we do promote playing responsibly.”
Their comments were made minutes before the latest Super Lotto winner, Trevor King, collected his $3.87 million winnings on August 16. (MM)
