The Social Justice Committee of the Anglican Church in Barbados has appealed to Government to exempt current students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) from paying tuition fees when the new policy takes effect next year.
In a statement issued yesterday, the commission said Government should also pay tuition for people pursuing programmes critical to national development, while introducing policies to ensure students complete degrees within a specific time.
In the statement, the chairman of the Commission, John Goddard, contended that the current model of funding university education was unsustainable and needed reform.
Government has decided it will stop paying tuition fees for Barbadian students at the UWI from next year but will continue to pay the economic costs. (PR/DP)
