Kiana Marshall has a chance today to win her third title of this year’s Island Heritage National Junior Tennis Championships.
At 8 a.m. at the National Tennis Centre, Wildey, Marshall will take on Kayla Frost in the final of the Under-16 girls’ singles.
Yesterday morning, Marshall defeated her doubles partner Cherisse Slocombe 6-3, 6-1 in the second semi-final to book her spot. Frost had been waiting on the outcome of the match after she had beaten Jaimie Lewis 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday.
Marshall and Slocombe also celebrated their second doubles title, beating Lewis and Ilana Blackman 7-5, 4-6 (10-6) in the tiebreak after both pairs won a set in the Under-18 final.
This match was much closer than last Thursday’s Under-16 finals where Marshall and Slocombe swept aside Lewis and Blackman 6-1, 6-3.
Slocombe has already won three titles. She has been the only one to stop Marshall so far, beating her 7-5, 6-4 in a close match in the Under-18s where there was only one break of serve in each set.
Marshall’s younger brother Kaipo defeated Christopher Phillips 8-6 yesterday morning to win the Under-12 singles titles.
However, he was on the losing side in the doubles, where he and Stephen Slocombe, Cherisse’s brother, were beaten 9-8 (7-2) by Aren Spencer and Lukus Gosselin.
Gavin Hutchinson is also in the hunt for multiple titles.
Yesterday, he beat his doubles partner Andrew Symmonds 6-3, 6-1 to set up a clash with Ajani King for the Under-18 boys’ singles title.
King beat Simon Lewis 6-3, 6-2 in the other semi-final. That final will also be played today as well as the second semi-final in the doubles.
Hutchinson and Symmonds will play Joshua Worme and Jared Spencer to determine who will play Simon Lewis and Emil Trotman tomorrow.
Yesterday, Hutchinson and Symmonds won the Under-16 doubles, beating Trotman and Kyle Wiggins 6-2, 7-5.
In the other final decided last Thursday, Phillips and Aaron Hayden beat Jadon Brome and Joshua Ponton 7-5, 5-7 (10-8) to claim the title in the Under-14 boys’ doubles. (SAT)
