Warrens sail into semi-finals

SUPERIOR?PLAY?from six-footer Rhe-Ann Niles and former Barbados captain Anthazia Mason propelled league champions Warrens Jaguars into the semi-finals of the Goddard Enterprises Limited Senior Volleyball Knockouts with a perfect record.
Warrens came from a set down to stop an inconsistent Flow Sentry Brokers Deacons 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-23, when a rescheduled women’s triple header was held at the Wildey Gymnasium on Sunday night.
After taking the first set, Deacons surprisingly switched Taymar Maynard for reserved setter Sharleen Browne. That move by coach Andrew Culpepper brought a smile to the Jaguars as they dismantled Deacons.
The attack of Mason and Niles and the setting of Sophia Walcott was given great assistance by the likes of veterans Julia Lewis and Fabia Greaves who lost as many points as they won while spiking.
Only Tameisha Webb, who came off of the bench, played with any consistency to threaten Warrens. However, at critical times, setter Browne went for less capable hitters in the front court to allow Warrens to build up winning advantages.
That was most obvious in the fourth set where Warrens surged from 20-23 to 25-23 thanks to poor setting options compounded by hitting errors by Deacons.
The remaining matches will decide the semi-final match-ups only, since Warrens, Deacons, defending champions Brydens Rockets and Freekz Customz Chargers cannot be overhauled by Toners, RBC Carlton or Club United.
Earlier, the Rockets surprisingly dropped a set to Club United before taking the game 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 25-14. Toners won their first game of the season by defeating Carlton in a five-setter, 25-14, 25-23, 14-25, 23-25, 15-8, with Barbados junior captain Ashley Marshall excelling for the winners.
Deacons would have played Chargers last night and Club would have finished their knockout season with a match against the Toners.
Prior to those matches, Warrens were 5-0 with a game in hand against Chargers. Chargers were 3-1 with games in hand against Warrens and Deacons. The Rockets were 4-1 with a match slated for tomorrow against Deacons while Deacons were 3-2. Carlton ended 5-1, Toners were 4-1 while Club were 0-5.
