All set for Double Thriller

Scrutineering at Courtesy Garage today should set the tone for tomorrow’s Thickets Double Thriller at Thickets, St Philip organized by the Barbados Association of Drifters and Dragsters (BADD) starting at 10 a.m.
Courtesy Garage’s GoodYear Tyres manager Mark Wilson handed over the sponsors’ cheque to the club’s public relations officer Nicholas Harrison yesterday at the Wildey, St Michael headquarters.
Wilson said it was among the ways the company gives back to the community, but he was also excited about the buildup to tomorrow’s racing.
“All the guys seem to have returned their cars to racing fitness, and I expect good times to be recorded during the Double Thriller which has been the buzzword for the past several days.
“I wish everyone a good day of racing and hope that the spectators listen to [the] advice of the marshals and let us have a safe and fantastic day,” he said.
Fifty-four cars and 13 motor cycles are entered for the event; the most eagerly awaited since the formation of the BADD club nearly five years ago.
It will come under the eyes of the technical specialists from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wildey complex.
After the scrutineering exercise, drivers will be out to dethrone Suleiman “Sol” Esuf who posted the fastest time among the cars of 10.189 seconds, but the challenge for him tomorrow is expected to be awesome.
“Sol is looking to get into the nine-second category, but Robert Bishop, in the Bajan Motors Mitsubishi Evo. VII, who was second fastest with a time of 10.419 seconds, is looking to take him down,” said BADD’s chairman Adrian Linton.
“Among the motor cyclists, Kelvin ‘Bird’ Daniel will have his work cut out with the presence of Learie Carasco. It is going to be one fantastic event.”
In the morning session, the chairman said, competition will be over an eighth of a mile, before the lunch break, and the  post-lunch session will be contested over a quarter-mile.
He said that a number of other fastmen will be facing the starter, among them Steve Bruce, Anthony-Ramon Archer, Dwayne “Shabba” White, Mathew “DMZ” Forde and Corey Stanford.
The Double Thriller has also attracted rookie Aaron Mason, who is pointed for the 11-seconds category at the wheel of a well-prepared Honda Civic Type R.
When quizzed about the competition, Mason spoke of drivers such as Mitsubishi Evo driver Jamaal “Fur” Batson, Sherlock Payne, Jamaal “Most Wanted” Sobers and Shawn Fields as the ones he has to watch.
