Herbert Thompson has resigned as Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ). The resignation takes immediate effect. He will, however, continue to serve as a member of the ECJ. Governor-General, Sir Patrick Allen, in a release states that he has accepted Thompson’s resignation from the Office of Chairman, thanking Thompson for his service to the ECJ. The King’s House Jamaica release further goes on to state that Thompson informed the Governor-General that the controversy which surrounded his receipt of the People’s National Party Award, on behalf of the ECJ, left him no option but to resign. Thompson also reiterated his conviction that the award was meant to honour the work of the ECJ in building Jamaica and was never meant for him personally. (Jamaica Gleaner)
