Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) says sometime soon it will apply to the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) for another increase in the base rate for electricity in Barbados.
News of this has come from Emera Caribbean president Sarah MacDonald during a conference call with members of the media yesterday to reinforce its message that it was not against Barbados’ push towards renewable energy.
In January 2010, BL&P was granted a rate increase by the FTC and less than a year later Emera acquired the local electricity company.
MacDonald, a Canadian who also heads Grand Bahama Power Company in The Bahamas, revealed that the move for another increase had become necessary as BL&P finalized plans for a new multimillion-dollar 50 to 60 megawatt power generation plant.
