Local netballers are set to land a rare payday.
A semi-professional tournament, with prize money in excess of $30 000, will be held in January next year.
It is the first time netballers will be paid such large sums in any tournament held in Barbados, and Cameron Greenidge, one of the organizers of the Barbados Invitational Fast 5 Netball Tournament (BIFNET), said they wanted to do something different.
The tournament will be held over two weekends – January 18, 19, 25 and 26 – and it has received approval from the International Netball Federation (INF), the parent body of the sport.
“It came about because we saw the need for something other than conventional netball,” Greenidge told WEEKENDSPORT, “and to offer more incentives other than the regular trophies.”
The winning team will take home $15 000, with the runner-up and third placed team receiving $10 000 and $8 000, respectively.
