JOAN PRESCOD cannot access her backyard from her back gate.
And, this is a constant worry to the 66-year-old, of Phillips Road, Pinelands, St Michael, as she said the actions of an unhelpful mechanic, who does not even live in the area, is preventing her from manoeuvring as she pleases.
“I want to add on a back piece to my home, but the workmen tell me they can’t work from the front and they can’t access from the back because of all the stuff,” she said.
Directly behind her are discarded vehicles and car parts, cans and galvanized sheets, completely blocking access to and from her back gate which Prescod said was a health hazard. However, she said she was not getting results from the relevant authorities.
“The NHC [National Housing Corporation] said it was a Ministry of Health problem but the man [spoke negatively to] the health inspectors who talked to him and didn’t do anything. Now, you come across mosquitoes, rats and dead chickens out there,” she said.
Prescod said she simply wanted the man to clear his property from her back gate so she could be comfortable. She said he no longer worked there and the land was public land, so he had no right to keep her boxed in.
“There is no sense in having a back gate you can’t access properly. Everyone else put on something on their houses to make themselves comfortable, but I’m the only body who can’t get anything done,” she said.
At the back, there was a small hut among the car parts. However, it was closed and residents in the area said the man was not present, confirming he no longer did business there. (CA)
