Literary treasures like George Lamming’s In The Castle Of My Skin serve as a chronicle for the present and future benefit of all Barbadians, says Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley.
He was addressing patrons at a read-a-thon to mark the 166th anniversary of a public library service in Barbados at the National Library Service in Independence Square yesterday.
“It is essential that our culture and history are passed on for the benefit of future generations,” Lashley said. “We must recognize its worth and take steps to protect, preserve and showcase it.”
He said the National Library Service stood ready to meet any challenges in order to remain relevant to its community.
Lashley read his favourite extract from In The Castle Of My Skin after which several personalities read in ten-minute slots.
