QC unbeaten in Under-19 netball

AN EXPLOSIVE FOURTH quarter by Queen’s College (QC) led the Husbands netball team to an impressive 36-34 win over defending champions Graydon Sealy when the Under-19 league continued yesterday at the Paddock Road Court.
Graydon Sealy’s tall, robust Under-21 national player Shonica Wharton had shaken off a slow first quarter at goal-shoot to constantly shift the defence of Ashley Marshall to lead QC 9-7 and 16-15 after the first two quarters.
Both QC and Graydon Sealy were the remaining unbeaten teams.
With Wharton hitting some long range bombs at one end, it took QC’s slightly better mid-court marshalled by Rebecca White at centre and Niara Forde at wing defence, to tilt the balance. Tremendous shooting from Cheneque Thomas at goal shoot and supporting play by the high leaping goal attack Vanessa Bobb saw QC taking the lead 25-24 at the end of the third quarter.
QC’s mid court play and finishing touches under the ring saw the game being blown open with the QC scoring four successive goals to rush to a 33-28 lead.
Some unforced errors by QC then saw Wharton getting the passes and pulling the game back with three successive long range shots.
With the score 36-34, White went down with a breathing problem with just ten seconds left on the clock and QC having possession.
On resumption, QC turned over the ball but Graydon Sealy did not have enough time to get the ball down court as they lost for the first time this season.
Wharton scored 26 goals from 30 attempts while goal attack Alyssa Bynoe contributed eight from 12.
For QC Thomas made 25 of 29 with Bobb adding 11 of 16. (KB)
