Barbados’ effort to reduce its fuel import bill by the use of renewable energy is likely to engage the attention of the House of Assembly when it sits today at 10 a.m.
Among the six Bills before the House is the Electric Light and Power Bill 2013, which will seek to legislate the supply and generation of electricity by renewable energy means, and enhance the security and reliability of Barbados’ electricity supply.
Under the proposed Electric Light and Power Act, persons may supply a limited quota of electricity to the public grid but may not supply electricity to another person except in accordance with a licence approved by the minister responsible for energy.
Anyone contravening that law would be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $100 000 or to imprisonment for two years, or to both. (RJ)
