A?Magistrates’ Court has heard that a Jamaican?national charged in connection with last week’s fatal hit-and-run roadside accident, has been living illegally in Barbados for nine years.
The revelation came from police prosecutor Constable David Hackett as he objected to bail when Voltan Samuda, 29, of 84 Kingsland Gardens, Christ Church, appeared at District “A” yesterday.
Samuda, who surrendered to police on Thursday, was not allowed to plead that, on November 6, he caused the death of roadside worker Carlene Stewart by driving the car registered XG616, on Blowers Road, St James, in a manner dangerous to the public.
Apart from pointing out the seriousness of the crime, Hackett told the court that the defendant had arrived in Barbados on October 14, 2004, and given a two-week stay but had never left the island.
His passport was taken into custody and he was remanded by Magistrate Graveney Bannister to HMP?Prisons Dodds until November 19 when the accused will appear at the Holetown Court.
Police are still looking for another man, who was a passenger in the car.
Here, Samuda on is way to court yesterday.
