Driver denied bail

The man accused of causing the death of Carlene Stewart on November 6 was denied bail when he appeared in the Holetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Stewart, a former employee of the Ministry of Transport and Works’ Drainage Unit, died after being struck by a vehicle while working along the road in Blowers, St James, two weeks ago.
Volton Samuda, who is charged with causing death by driving in a manner dangerous to the public, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Barbara Cooke-Alleyne.
Prosecutor Sergeant Junior Kirton objected to bail, arguing the alleged offence was “a very serious one” and that the accused was a non-national “whose status is in question”. (SD)
