It was built as a signal to the regeneration of Speightstown but four years after the town’s $750 000 jetty was damaged it remains closed, its decaying boards being beaten daily by pounding waves.
As a result, a petition has been launched on Facebook appealing to Government to repair the Speightstown jetty as a matter of urgency.
Frank Holder, a social activist and St Peter resident, has set up a page on the social media website called Friends of the Speightstown Jetty to bring public awareness to the crumbling pier which was damaged during stormy weather in 2009.
Holder said he was expecting to get 500 signatures and would be forwarding the petition to Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, Agriculture Minister Dr David Estwick and Transport and Works Minister Michael Lashley.
He told the WEEKEND?NATION that the repairing of the popular jetty, which is located next to the Speightstown Fish Market, was long overdue.
“Locals and tourists used to go there to fish or just to watch the sun set. It was a great recreational spot for residents of Speigtstown and visitors to the island but the wooden deck is decaying,” Holder said.
