Churches should look at how the practice of “forcing” couples to say together is adding to domestic violence.
The admonition came out of a panel discussion on Domestic Violence Act And The Church’s Response which formed part of the Ebenezer Circuit Convention at Beulah Methodist in St Philip yesterday.
Among the panellists were Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, social worker Sharon Rose-Gittens, sergeant in charge of community policing for St John and St Philip Roland Cobbler and attorney at law Creig Kinch, who made the call for the churches to examine their stance on reconciliation.
Kinch, also a Christian, suggested that churches reconsider how their practice of encouraging couples to stay together even in abusive relationships was contributing to domestic violence. By insisting that couples stay together, claimed Kinch, churches were actually doing more harm than good. (LK)
