The remarkable ability of people during the Yuletide season to somehow erase the harshness of our times makes the celebration of Christmas unique. It is the one time of the year when we are able to transcend our national circumstances and look past our own personal trials to come together, give and share.
Whatever the challenges we encounter – and this year there are many – at Christmas time they seem a little more bearable. Moreover, it is at this time that as Christians we embrace the virtues of charity and goodness.
This is the magic of Christmas.
No wonder, more than 2 000 years after the birth of Christ, Christmas remains the world’s biggest nativity celebration with its message of peace and goodwill towards all.
But Christmas is much more than the uniting of families, friends and people worldwide, outpourings of support for those in need, merriment and the sheer joy of being together.
As Christians, it is important to remember the example of Jesus Christ.
Born in the humblest of circumstances, He rose to the highest heights. His was a life of service, calling for the courage and commitment to stick to what He knew was right even though it was often against conventional wisdom. He was called to endure the severest test of all by giving Himself to save mankind. There is an enduring message for us in the story of his life.
Barbados is unfortunately experiencing its own stern tests. For many of our citizens, the year has been far from good – and the uncertainty of what the New Year brings means it will not be a glittering season.
The symbolism of Christmas, then, is even more important now because of its messages of hope and inspiration.
One message we can take away is that, with God by our side, there will be a brighter tomorrow.
As we observe cherished customs and traditions, in the spirit of grace that is Christmas, let us reaffirm the gift-giving that defines us – our civility, unity, neighbourliness, our love for one another.
Treasure life
As we face adversity, with new threats looming, let us also continue to treasure the life we have in this our favoured nation. Let us be thankful for the many blessings we enjoy.
For our part, we in the Barbados Labour Party will do all that we can to continue to represent the interests of ALL Barbadians and support you in whatever ways we can. We are each other’s keepers.
My special wish and fervent prayer is that, with tougher times looming, we all continue to exemplify throughout the coming year and always the true spirit of Christmas, the love and humanity of this time, the selflessness and compassion of the season.
Let us foster in our communities a real disposition of neighbourly love, as the foundation for national renewal and growth.
Let us look to the future with renewed strength, courage and hope – so inspired by the indomitable spirit of the One whose life we celebrate at this time.
It is in this spirit that I offer to you and yours the very best wishes for the season, and rich blessings and prosperity in the New Year on behalf of the Barbados Labour Party and my family.
May God richly bless each of you this Christmas season and always, and may God continue to bless this country which we love.
