Journal highlights rags-to-riches duo

THE STORIES OF how two Barbadians of different races rose from poverty to prominence in early Barbados are among the highlights of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’s 80th anniversary journal launched on Monday evening at St Ann’s Garrison.
President Sir Trevor Carmichael spoke of an article on black businessman, philanthropist and slave owner Joseph Rachell.
“He was a man from what I gather . . . of special skills and possibly may be credited as the first successful black businessman in the era of slavery, quite a while before London Bourne whom we know more about . . . ,” he said.
Journal editor Dr Karl Watson said Rachell’s story should be brought to the attention of Barbadians, including children.
