Brothers Ricky and Glyne Skeete are emerging as the team to beat in the annual Sagicor General Family Golf Championships.
Yesterday at the Barbados Golf Club, the Skeetes of Holders Hill, St James, were named overall net winners of the championships (net 66) and also won the Siblings Division for the second year running as they posted a gross 68 in the fun-filled 2014 tournament, sponsored by Sagicor General Insurance.
Barbados players Scott and Muffin Stollmeyer were also in outstanding form, posting a gross 68 to emerge overall gross champions of the day.
More than 70 players contested four divisions in the championships. The other winners were: Scott and Muffin Stollmeyer (Husband and Wife); Charles and Donald Leacock (Parent and Child) and John Odle and Hiraldo Thomas (Open Division).
From the tee-off, in sunny conditions yesterday, the Skeete brothers appeared determined to defend their title in the two-ball/ better-ball competition.
They registered an eagle on the first hole, along with three birdies, to post a six-under par 30 on the front-nine and then two over on the back nine.
This was good enough to stave off two other brothers of cricket fame, Joseph and Thomas Harris, who took the net prize in the Siblings Division with net 68.
There was also keen rivalry among father and son teams, where former Barbados junior captain Donald Leacock and his father Charles edged top Barbados player James Johnson and his father Ralph to win that division.
Both teams shot a gross 71 over their 18 holes but the Johnsons were pipped on the count-back system as the Leacocks registered 35 on the back-nine holes while the Johnsons posted 36.
The net winners in the Parent and Child category were Hadley and Mario Byer, who shot a net 69 and also edged Arthur and Roger Edghill on the count-back system.
Sagicor General’s vice-president of marketing, Mark Blakeley, and his wife Leiza also enjoyed a good day on the greens and fairways as they emerged net winners in the Husband and Wife category, posting 68.
Net winners in the Open Division were Mike Foster and Jesse Pinheiro, with a score of 69.
Blakeley thanked players and organizers for contributing to another successful tournament.
“It was a great event. We had a good turnout and fine weather. At Sagicor General we value family and we are happy to support such an event that provides a great start to the new year,” he said. (PR/BA)
