WHILE ANOTHER LOW level trough system is affecting the region, no further flood danger is predicted.
Senior meteorologist of the Barbados Meteorological Office, Clairmonte Williams, said yesterday there was a general improvement across the island chain since heavy rainfall and severe flooding affected St Vincent, St Lucia and Dominica around Christmas, resulting in flooding, landslides and a number of deaths.
“We are not seeing anything significant over the island chain for the next four to five days. We can expect a general improvement across the island chain and reasonably fair conditions,” he said.
Williams cautioned this did not mean there was not going to be any rainfall, however, as he forecast widely scattered showers.
“The low level trough resulted in wide-ranging showers and instability and will continue to generate these showers across the island chain into the first half of tomorrow [today]. However, it has weakened,” he said.
As for Barbados, Williams said the island had recorded below average rainfall for December and for the year in general.
“In December, we had two and a half inches of rainfall while the average is three and a half. Overall, we had about 46 inches of rain last year and that is compared to the average of 50 inches so we were a little down. It is not the worst, but a little below what we are accustomed to,” he said.
So far for the year, Williams said 20 millimetres of rain had been recorded which was “not too bad”. (CA)
