Chief?Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul, thinks the recent shortage of some fruits such as mangoes and plantains, reinforces the need for local farmers to be given a chance to grow more.
He stressed there would be no further need for this country to import bananas by next year if farmers were given the opportunity to expand their output.
“The recent shortage of some products demonstrates the necessity of being able to maintain your own capability to supply. For instance, we have had wonderful success with the banana initiative to the extent that I anticipate that by yearend, we could be able to supply 100 per cent of the bananas that we eat,” Paul told the DAILY NATION in a interview.
“There should be no need to import bananas in another year because we are growing them here and can supply enough to feed this country. We have enough idle lands in Barbados that if we can start to cultivate them seriously, we can grow enough bananas to supply ourselves with them.
