Jazz aficionados had a feast last week.
Big names on the international jazz scene were in town for the second annual Naniki Caribbean Jazz Safari staged by Tom Hinds who has for some time been providing a stage at his idyllic St Joseph get-away, Naniki, for jazz musicians to perform and their followers to enjoy.
Following last year’s successful event, Tom again treated Jazz fans to the artistry of legends in the business on the Night Of Legends, the opening night of the Barbados leg of the safari. It was a night when the entertainment was blended with an act of humanity to benefit victims of the recent flooding. Mary Wilson, former member of the 1970s all-girl group The Supremes, was the headline act, presenting the story of another legend, Lena Horne, in song.
The achievements of international great Roy Haynes, whose Barbadian parentage gives him strong links with the island, were also recognized with the presentation of the Caribbean Jazz Safari Legends Award.
Social Scene was there when the Naniki Jazz Safari began.
