Rescue call

Stop the rot?and save the tourism industry.
That was the urgent call from former president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), Colin Jordan, as the industry continues to be beset by persistent declines in arrivals and lack of implementation of a rescue plan by the Government.
Addressing the seventh People’s Assembly organised by the opposition Barbados Labour Party at Darryl Jordan Secondary School in St Lucy on Thursday night, Jordan admitted there were a few positive things in the industry, namely an increase
in cruise ship calls and passengers, and air passenger arrivals from Scandinavia and Germany. But he said the negatives outweighed them.
Jordan listed the negative issues as: the costs of operation in the industry; business viability; declining arrivals from the key markets; concerns regarding safety and crime; and the quality of the ageing local product.
