NUPW concern

The?National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is not taking the spiralling lay-offs in the public service lying down.
It has planned a major meeting with its shop stewards for Thursday at its headquarters in Dalkeith, St Michael, where the item at the top of the agenda will be public sector lay-offs that now number close to 1 000 – including almost 400 from the Drainage Division.
Deputy general secretary Roslyn Smith said the meeting would be to sensitise shop stewards to the ongoing issue and to look at strategies to assist the scores of displaced workers.
However, sources said it was very likely that meeting would be used to “send a strong message to the Government” that workers were not at all happy with the way the issue of separating employees from the public service was being handled.
