Seeking out effective leadership

Leadership is the answer to many of the challenges Barbados is now facing, says respected human resources practitioner Rosalind Jackson, who is Caribbean Catalyst Inc.’s managing director.
“If each private and public sector entity, team [and] department in Barbados relentlessly focused on continuously improving leadership of its team, then our productivity would soar,” Jackson said last week as the Barbados Best Employers (BBE) 2014 programme was launched at the Savannah Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church.
Caribbean Catalyst has brought back the biennial programme this year in partnership with its loyal sponsor the Nation Publishing Co. Ltd, which has been involved since the BBE started in 2010.
The organisers are hoping to attract increased participation in the BBE this year and public, private sector, and non-governmental organisations have up to February 27 to apply.
Jackson said a “leadership effectiveness indicator” was an innovation to the programme, noting that the increased productivity likely from improved team leadership “would clearly redound to the sustainability of our nation”.
“Our motivation and philosophy therefore centre around promoting leadership effectiveness through excellent engagement of our best resource – our people – nationwide. We are on a mission to seek out exemplary leadership, highlight it and showcase it so that Barbadian HR best practices can be shared and replicated by organisations interested in continuous improvement,” she said.
Jackson said the BBE was not a beauty contest, but was “aimed at helping organisations to chart their continuous improvement path”.
