March 15 election date?

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has told supporters of his ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) to keep March 15 in mind as the party campaigns for a general election constitutionally due next month.
“I said I wanted to come here because I had an announcement to make. I am going to make the announcement, and the announcement is … to keep a particular date in mind,” he told supporters at a public meeting here last night.
“You are not going to know exactly what is going to happen on that date but I want you to keep that date in mind. The date of the 15th of March 2014, just keep that date,” he told supporters.
“Just keep that date in mind dear people, just keep that date in mind, I told you I was going to make an announcement…keep that date in mind, the 15 of March,” he added.
Spencer’s UPP is expected to face a tough battle from the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ALP), which lost the last two general elections here under former prime minister Lester Bird.
While Bird is still a candidate for the ALP in the polls, the party is under the leadership of Gaston Browne, who in recent weeks has welcomed an opinion poll showing that the ALP would win the next general election.
In the 2009 general election, the UPP won nine of the 17 seats with the remainder going to the ALP and Browne told CMC that like Prime Minister Spencer, he too was equally confident that his party would reverse the 2009 results when it received 46.9 per cent of the popular votes, polling 19 657 votes.
