Boost to help needy children

SEVERAL CHILDREN in Barbados are neglected or living in poverty despite the country’s level of development.
This is according to UNICEF’s representative for the Eastern Caribbean, Khin-Sandi Lwin, who accepted a donation of more than $35 000 yesterday from buyers’ club PriceSmart.
She said the funds, which were collected during a Christmas and New Year drive, would go towards a number of activities, including the Blue Teddy Bear initiative that addressed child neglect and child abuse.
“You see a lot of wealth and prosperity around us . . . . Tourists come and see that Barbados is well-developed, but underneath the surface you still have a significant number of children living in poverty and those who are in homes that may look prosperous, but they are abused and neglected,” she said yesterday morning at PriceSmart’s Green Hill, St Michael outlet.
