Sir Roy: Who’ll pay?

WHO IS GOING TO pay for the disruption and “mayhem” that will occur as dozens of cane-hauling trucks and tractors make their way from across the island to Portvale Sugar Factory?
This question and the answer, said General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), Sir Roy Trotman, are the sticking points of the negotiations between players in the sugar industry and the union.
Sir Roy, who was speaking to the Sunday Sun as the BWU hosted its 2014 week of excellence Wellness Expo in Heroes Square yesterday, said the most recent meeting with officials was held last Thursday and, coming out of it, was one major issue.
“The major problem about the 2014 sugar harvest is going to be the possibility of long lines of trailers and trucks clogging up the streets in the spine roads leading to Portvale and the fact that might have significant negative implications for the efficiencies in reaping and also for the earnings of those who haul canes,” Sir Roy explained.
