A CONDEMNED HOUSE is causing no end of concern to Maravine Williams, who lives next door in Lower Carlton, St James.
She said the building was marked by the Ministry of Health for demolition but continued to cause her headaches.
“After that house got old, the owners would not do repairs and left it to fall into disrepair. My problem is that the roof is made of asbestos and it is breaking up, plus the house is infested with termites, which come over to my home and garden.
“Also, there is an odour which bothers me and all sorts of animals go inside there and die. It is offensive,” she said.
She also said when it rained, things were not made any better.
Williams said she found the house when she moved there more than 40 years ago but back then it was in good shape. She said the owner’s daughter took him away to care for him after he got old and his brother lived in front of the condemned building.
Williams said she was in fear for her health and her family’s, which included a sister with Down Syndrome, and a daughter who lived upstairs.
The owner’s brother was at home when a NATION team visited last week. He, however, said the property was the responsibility of his brother.
The DAILY NATION contacted a department of the Ministry of Health concerning the matter.
A representative, who was not authorised to speak to the Press, would only say steps would be taken soon to address the matter.
