INDUSTRIAL ACTION PLANNED today for the Transport Board is off pending Government’s commitment to study proposals by the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), including enhancing severance packages and protecting the most vulnerable workers there.
After more than two hours of talks at Government Headquarters last night, chaired by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, between the union and Transport Board management, BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman said Government had agreed to take some time to study more fully the position outlined by BWU.
As a result, he said, “we have made a very conscious decision that the industrial action planned for Tuesday is on hold”.
Sir Roy said the talks focused on the processes being used to retrench some 250 workers from the state-owned board, as well as the kinds of enhancement arrangements being considered, what protection there would be for the most vulnerable, and how a greater level of ease could generally be brought to those losing their jobs at this time.
Stating that over 100 employees, including drivers, security personnel and general workers, had received letters yesterday, Sir Roy said this was a cause for concern.
