Lay-offs not handled well, says senator

THERE HAVE?BEEN weaknesses in the way Government has handled the retrenchment process, acknowledged Minister of Labour and Human Resource Development, Senator Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo yesterday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 16th conference of the Human Resources Management Association of Barbados (HRMAB) held at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, Byer-Suckoo said the recent exercise of retrenchment in central Government and the statutory agencies showed some deficiencies in how some of the human resources management practises are carried out.
“Certainly we have seen some criticism for the how the process was managed in terms of counselling, in terms of actually delivering the dreaded notice and it has thrown up some issues and deficiencies. And, of course, we realise there has to be some training in handling terminations,” said Byer-Suckoo.
She made the also used the opportunity to highlight the issue of performance assessments and how it relates to the termination process.
The minister said the recent terminations were not done on the basis of performance assessments but other criteria were used, which made it clear that there is a need for strengthening of performance monitoring systems. (LK)
