Davis Cup history for Team Barbados

IT WAS YEARS in coming, but Barbados have finally served their way into Davis Cup history.
Twenty-four minutes was it all took for the hosts to wrap up today’s tie and secure a historic berth in the Americas Group II final, as El Salvador’s No. 1 Marcelo Arevalo predictably retired hurt against Darian King at the National Tennis Centre.
Clearly hobbled by a niggling back injury, Arevalo simply called it quits just one game into the second set with King already leading 6-0, 1-0.
The win gave Barbados an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie, ahead of the final reverse singles match which pits local No. 3 Seanon Williams against teenager Salvador Bolanos.
It will be the first ever final appearance in the country’s 24-year history of playing Davis Cup.
Barbados await the winner of the Mexico-Peru rubber which Mexico were leading 2-1. (JM)
