“IT’S?ABOUT?RESPECT. We are workers too!”
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
These were among the cries from dozens of workers at Portvale Sugar Factory, now embroiled in a near week-old strike called by the Barbados Workers’ Union  against the Barbados Agricultural Management Company over the redundancy of 57 workers from Andrews Sugar Factory.
The strike is affecting all and sundry – from the hierarchy to the cane cutters, loaders, operators, tractor drivers and boiler workers.
The sugar industry will lose about $144 000 a day from the protest action while the strain of going unpaid over the past few days is already crippling several workers.
