AS BARBADOS GETS ready to celebrate Earth Day next week, the island has lost another one of its mature mahogany trees.
And officials at the Barbados National Trust (BNT) are investigating to see who destroyed it and whether that person(s) had permission to do so.
On Tuesday, men operating heavy duty machinery cut down the massively girthed tree, which was located near the Welcome Inn Hotel on Maxwell Coast Road, Christ Church.
The destruction raised the ire of many passersby, including that of BNT’s president Dr Karl Watson.
“This was a good mature tree, in good health, and we are trying to find out who did it,” Dr Watson said, adding BNT officials had tried to reach Town and Country Planning officials to see if permission had been sought and granted.
“This was a beautiful tree, but the deed has been done. It is very sad,” said Dr Watson. (HLE)
