The man whose executive was responsible for removing Nigel Lloyd is sure glad to see him back.
Local basketball’s longest-serving president Gay Griffith feels it’s been equally as long that the English-born coach return to lead his adoptive home, saying Lloyd should never have been sacked as national head coach.
The former Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) head of 15 years expressed the sentiment just days after the executive announced Lloyd’s appointment following an eight-year hiatus.
“Nigel Lloyd is just the best option available to Barbados and if he’s willing to coach the national team then he’s really the only option for us,” said Griffith.
“He is Barbadian, studied and played in the United States, coached in England, has knowledge of the US system, knowledge of English system, and is well respected internationally because even now he still has contacts and is an excellent scout.
“So as far as I am concerned it is an excellent decision by the BABA as our future results will show,” he added.
It’s a huge vote of confidence for a man widely credited for ushering in the most successful era of Bajan basketball as first a player and then coach.
