Professor: Docs under threat

The internet?and alternative medicine have put doctors and the traditional medical field under threat, Professor Emeritus Henry Fraser said yesterday.
He was speaking at the 75th Continuing Medical Education (CME) Conference, put on by the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Professor Fraser is a retired dean of the faculty.
The two-day conference, whose theme is Specialty Updates For Primary Care Providers, ends today.
“Our great University of the West Indies, the standards we’ve set and the training that most of us here have received are under constant daily threat by a new society that is seduced by the glamorous claims of many forms of alternative practices and by the claims of medical schools whose raison d’être, or reason for existing, is business first and medicine is merely the business of their business,” Professor Fraser told his audience.
In addition, he said the Internet meant patients had more access to information and were now more aware of advances made in the field. (HL-E)
