ALTAR CALL: Call for godly mothers

Are you a godly mother? What are you doing about your child’s eternity?
These questions were asked by Indian minister Dr Leonard Thompson during a Mother’s Day service at the Church of Christ, Church Village, St Philip, two Sundays ago.
During the more than two-hour service, mothers were serenaded and pampered by members of the church, then later treated to a buffet-styled luncheon led by the pastoral team.
Thompson pointed out the importance of honouring both mothers and fathers, noting this was one of God’s Ten Commandments.
He said honouring mothers was not simply about buying flowers, perfume, gold and treating them to special lunches on Mother’s Day, but they should be honoured for their roles in the home and community.
Referring to the recognition Jesus gave His mother seconds before He died, and how Moses’ mother looked out for the well-being of her son by hiding him to avoid his death at the hands of Pharoah, Thompson said the society as a whole needed more godly mothers.
“My question to mothers is: are you a godly mother? Not just are you good and nice to your children, but are you a godly mother?”
Thompson said children growing up under godly mothers “are usually disciplined and godly” and “their faith is usually transmitted down to their children”, as was the case with Moses.
“We know that Moses’ mother, Jochebed, was godly because she was bold and she believed in Jehovah God. She trusted God with her son.
Do you trust God with your children?”
He said Jochebed loved Moses deeply and made sacrifices for his well-being.
“Do you love your children the way Moses’ mother loved him?” Thompson again asked.
“There is a total breakdown in family life, with abortion, divorces and babies being put into orphanages because the mothers don’t want them.
“Moses’ mother [was not like that]. She loved her son and went to extremes [to prove that love].”
He added: “A mother’s love can prompt repentance . . . . A mother’s true love will do its best above all to protect her children from going into eternity without Jesus Christ.”
Along with special ministry in song and poetry, mothers of the church participated in a hat competition.
