It was a Barbados one-two as Bruggadung 2 stole the spotlight of the Barbados May Regatta with a 100 per cent record when the two-day event climaxed last Sunday afternoon in Carlisle Bay.Â
Competing in the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) 1 Series, the crew, led by their captain Paul Johnson, won all four of their allotted races ahead of his brother Ralph Johnson on Rapajam, who had to settle for second place with two second place and two third place finishes.
Third was the only Trinidadian entrant and defending champion C-Moss, owned and captained by Norman De Costa.
There was a similar result in the CSA Series 2. The British Virgin Islands and Barbados-based boat Leonora, owned and skippered by David Spieler, took all four races ahead of Dragon Magic which had to settle for second place in each race after Peter Hoad’s Paddington ran aground on the opening day and took no further part in the two-day event.
In the Cruising Series where only one race was contested on each day, Ten Seven, owned and skippered by Ian Hicklin, emerged victorious ahead of the Geoffrey Evelyn’s Lantana. Other Business and Waymar finished third and fourth, respectively.
In the Multihull class there was only one entrant in Silver Bullet.
The popular J24 series usually is where most of the action and excitement is centred, and this year was no different.
Only five boats took part in the series but in the end it was Dr Robbie Yearwood of Grenada, in his boat Die Hard, which took the top honours with nine points ahead of the fast finishing Robert Povey’s Hawkeye of Barbados, who ended on ten points. Third was Glory Glaze, with Impulse and Shakin bringing up the rear.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony at the Barbados Yacht Club, events chairman Stephanie Brooks said that despite the small turnout everyone had an enjoyable time.
This year’s series, which was co-sponsored by Mount Gay, attracted a total of 16 boats inclusive of one each from Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada. (CH)
