Top flight

Calypsonian?Crazy predicted that in time to come, cars will fly in the sky.
The local motorsport fraternity saw that prediction virtually come to pass when they celebrated the reopening of the Bushy Park Racing Circuit during last weekend’s historic Top Gear Festival, featuring Formula 1 world leader and 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton.
There were thrills and one major spill as the thousands of racing fans in attendance enjoyed the first round of the Global Rally Cross Championship for 2014 with heated door to door tarmac and gravel action, featuring the likes of Tanner Foust, Nelson Piquet Jr and Ken Block.
Two-time World Rally champion Marcus Gronholm was also present but not to compete, only to oversee the development of his young protégé and GRC rookie Joni Wiman.
The action was fast-paced over the two days with fans getting a taste of pursuits and showdowns between classic and modern cars. There were old racers from Le Mans to Formula 1 and from the fearsome Group B Rally Monsters to a slick Italian Ferrari showdown.
Hamilton provided the Barbadians with a special treat when he fired up the Mercedes AMG F1 W04 and did some hot laps and donuts. He also teamed up with fellow Monster driver Block for a special race between F1 Car and Rally Cross Car.
Block pulled out his party tricks with some awesome slides and, to cap it off, he and Hamilton teamed up for some donuts. (SW/EZS)
