Local table tennis will be receiving a major boost through the visit of ITTF coach Ramon Ortega Montes who is on a three-week assignment in Barbados.
Arranged through the Olympic Solidarity Programme to help develop table tennis in the island, Montes’ trip is the initial part of a two-stint visit ahead of Barbados hosting the World Cadet Challenge in October.
Montes’ visit is also timely for the Barbados Table Tennis Association as it embarks on a development thrust under the mantra Table Tennis Everywhere.
“We are very fortunate to have the services of such a highly qualified and competent coach,” said Ray Jackman, president of the Table Tennis Association, on the eve of an umpiring course.
“We benefited from the expertise of Ramon just last year when he was instrumental in structuring a training camp. Now his scope has been broadened considerably as he seeks to develop this infectious sport throughout the primary and secondary schools of Barbados,” Jackman said.
Montes will also be conducting clinics for level one coaches and umpires as part of his development programme. The first clinic begins tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, St Michael, and will continue daily throughout the week.
“It should be of special interest to teachers and other individuals who may wish to officiate at the upcoming international junior tournament in October. There are several opportunities available to umpires and referees at regional and international level and I encourage local sports enthusiasts to get involved,” said Jackman.
Anyone interested in participating in the course should contact the association at barbadostable [email protected] or phone 232-2109. (PH)
