Tempers have started to flare at the National Union of Public Workers’ headquarters where workers of the National Conservation Commission are meeting with their representatives. The closed meeting started about 90 minutes ago and loud, angry voices could be heard from outside, as workers articulate their worsening situations.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said the row over the retrenchment of nearly 200 workers would be referred to the independent Employment Rights Tribunal.
According to Stuart, the outcome of the tribunal’s work could be the rehiring of some workers and the layoff of a number who had not been previously affected by the job-cutting programme.
The Barbados Workers Union is also meeting with NCC workers today in a separate meeting. (YB/NB)
